What is glycolic acid (and why it's the "strongest" AHA)

Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid, abbreviated AHA: a family of gentle acids naturally found in fruit, milk, and sugar cane. Glycolic acid, in particular, is the "member" associated with sugar cane, although what you find in cosmetics is typically obtained by synthesis for controlled purity (more stable and predictable than the "raw" version). "Acid" here doesn't mean corrosive: it means a molecule that, upon contact with the skin, works chemically on the outermost layer.

Its key characteristic is its size: it is the smallest AHA molecule in existence (molecular weight 76, versus 90 for lactic acid and 152 for mandelic acid). The smaller it is, the faster and deeper it penetrates the epidermis—the outer layer of the skin. How to use glycolic acid: in the evening, on dry skin, starting slowly

Practical rules, in order. First, in the evening: after applying glycolic acid, the skin is more sensitive to the sun, so it's used at night and left to work while you sleep. Second, on clean, dry skin: applying it to wet skin increases penetration and thus the tingling; wait a minute after cleansing. Third, start slowly: don't start at full strength, the skin needs to get used to it.

Here lies the most typical mistake made by men, who usually either do nothing or overdo it: "if twice is good, every night is better." False, and harmful. What % and pH to choose (and why percentage alone says nothing)

This is the technical point that competitors skip, and it's what helps you choose well. The effectiveness of a glycolic acid does not only depend on the percentage printed on the label. It depends on the combination of concentration and pH.

pH measures how acidic a solution is. Glycolic acid is only active in its "free acid" form (technically, free acid value): if the pH is too high, the molecule is largely neutralized and therefore inactive, even if the label shows a high percentage. The actual exfoliating action increases as the pH approaches about 3-4.

Why does glycolic acid burn or sting? Is it normal?

Legitimate question, and forums are full of scared people. Let's set clear boundaries.

✔ NORMAL tingling

A slight tingling, warmth, or prickling sensation for a few seconds or minutes immediately after application, especially the first few times. This is the acid beginning to work on the skin's pH. It goes away on its own.

✘ Burning to STOP

Intense and persistent burning beyond a few minutes, bright redness, itching, a "burning or tightening" sensation, patchy skin, or skin still red the next day. This is NOT "it's working."

Be clear with yourself: true burning is not a sign of efficacy to romanticize. It's a signal that the barrier is being damaged. The right move is simple: reduce the frequency, space out applications, possibly apply a moisturizer afterwards, and if the discomfort persists, stop and talk to a dermatologist. There's no prize for enduring pain.

How long should the tingling last?

A few seconds, at most a few minutes, and decreasing as the skin gets used to it. If after several applications it continues to sting strongly and for a long time, you are being too aggressive: less often, and on well-dried skin.

The rule you cannot skip: SPF the next day

This is non-negotiable, and it's the part where too many articles are hypocritical. By removing the superficial stratum corneum — which also acts as a small natural screen — glycolic acid increases the skin's sensitivity to the sun (photosensitivity).

How much? A study (reported in the CIR panel proceedings, based on data sponsored by the American regulatory body, the FDA) found approximately +18% increased sensitivity to sun erythema after about four weeks of using 10% glycolic acid. The reassuring note: this effect is temporary and reversible, and subsides about a week after stopping. Nevertheless, it remains a well-studied cosmetic tool considered safe at the concentrations used at home — with one condition, which is not optional.

The condition is only one and it is not negotiable: the next day, SPF is part of the treatment, not an option. Using glycolic acid without sun protection is the best way to get more spots instead of fewer — a perfect self-sabotage, because you exfoliate to even out skin tone and then ruin it in the sun. Can it be combined with niacinamide, retinol or vitamin C?

Three answers, because there are legends circulating here.

Niacinamide: yes, in fact, it's a PRO combo. For years it was said that niacinamide (vitamin B3, which strengthens the barrier and works on spots) and glycolic "cancel each other out" due to pH. Current dermatology considers this theory outdated: in a well-buffered formula, they coexist perfectly and are synergistic. Glycolic exfoliates and brightens; niacinamide strengthens the barrier, reduces sensitization, and inhibits melanin transfer. For a man with uneven tone and post-pimple marks, it's the ideal pair, not a mistake.

Retinol and pure vitamin C: not at the same time, for beginners. Layering glycolic acid with retinoids or pure vitamin C at the same instant is a recipe for over-exfoliation: a damaged barrier, redness, sensitivity. Keep them on different evenings or at different times until your skin is strong and accustomed.

Also to be avoided: physical scrubs (grains) on the same day as glycolic acid, and application immediately after shaving on micro-cuts — it will sting much more on those. Wait until the skin is intact.

Glycolic or salicylic? In three lines

Different question, different article. In summary: glycolic acid (AHA) works on the surface — texture, radiance, spots, anti-aging. Salicylic acid (BHA) is oil-soluble, meaning it "enters" the pore by dissolving sebum, and is often preferred for active acne and very oily skin. Often it's not "either/or": it depends on your goal.   • Using it daily from the start. Destroys the barrier. Start 1-2 times a week and cycle.
  • Skipping SPF. The mistake that worsens spots instead of removing them. Never.
  • Mixing poorly at the same time retinol, pure vitamin C, or physical scrubs: over-exfoliation.
  • Applying it on wet skin or immediately after shaving on cuts. Stings much more, unnecessarily.
  • Chasing the highest percentage ignoring the pH. "Stronger" on the label doesn't mean better.

The myth to debunk: "glycolic acid thins the skin"

A phrase repeated parrot-fashion and a source of unjustified fears. The truth: at moderate cosmetic concentrations, glycolic acid thins only the excess dead stratum corneum — the part that would have shed anyway. The vital epidermis and underlying dermis, in fact, tend to thicken (more collagen, more water-retaining substance). Harmful thinning, micro-abrasions, and broken capillaries only come from abuse: aggressive daily use, high percentages, overlapping acids. The problem is not glycolic acid: it's glycolic acid used incorrectly and too often.
